Nursing homes and other healthcare facilities must develop, implement, and permanently maintain an in-service training program for nurse aides that is appropriate and effective, as determined by nurse aide performance reviews and the facility assessment. The program must include 12 hours of training per year and must address dementia management, resident abuse prevention, care of cognitively impaired residents, and other areas of weakness identified in performance reviews and the facility assessment. It must also support current scope and standards of practice and include a process for tracking nurse aide participation in the required trainings. Facilities must also evaluate nurse aides to determine if the training has been effective and assess nurse aides to ensure residents attain or maintain the highest practicable physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being. This new letter requires nursing homes and other healthcare facilities to update their nurse aide training programs to meet the requirements set forth in the letter.
