Clearpol's Summary of this Guidance
This letter outlines the competencies and skills sets required of nursing staff to provide care for residents with mental and psychosocial disorders, as well as those with a history of trauma and/or post-traumatic stress disorder. It requires that the facility have sufficient staff to meet the needs of the resident population, as determined by individual assessments and care plans. Non-pharmacological interventions must be developed and implemented for residents with behavioral health needs. Facilities must have sufficient direct care staff with knowledge of behavioral health care and services, and must demonstrate reasonable attempts to provide or arrange for specialized services if needed. Nursing staff must have the necessary knowledge and skills to interact with residents in a way that promotes their psychological and emotional well-being.
