The California Department of Health has issued a new All Facilities Letter requiring nursing homes and other healthcare facilities to provide staff with training on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) issues. The amendment to Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations mandates that registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, certified nurse assistants, and medical directors receive training designed to eliminate and prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Facilities must comply with these requirements by August 1, 2018, and provide training at least once every two years. New staff must receive training within six months of hire, and facilities must maintain records of training programs. The training must cover definitions, communication methods, historical challenges faced by older LGBT individuals, professionalism, and legal issues related to LGBT persons.
