The California Department of Health has issued an All Facilities Letter (AFL) reinstating the ability of skilled nursing facilities (SNF), nursing facilities (NF), and intermediate care facilities (ICF) to use automated drug delivery systems (ADDS) that allow personnel access to multiple drugs not patient-specific in design, provided electronic and mechanical safeguards are in place to ensure drugs are delivered to the correct patient. Facilities must obtain authorization from the California Department of Public Health's Licensing and Certification Program (L&C) prior to using such an ADDS. The letter also outlines steps facilities must take to maintain compliance with ADDS statutory requirements. Failure to comply with the requirements may result in revocation of authorization and referral to the Board of Pharmacy (BOP).
