The California Department of Health has issued an All Facilities Letter reminding healthcare facilities, including nursing homes, to implement precautionary measures to keep individuals safe and comfortable during extremely hot weather. Facilities must have contingency plans in place to deal with the loss of air conditioning and take measures to ensure patients and residents are free of adverse conditions that may cause heat-related health complications. The letter also advises facilities to report extreme heat conditions that compromise patient health and safety and/or require an evacuation, transfer, or discharge of patients. Recommended measures include dressing residents in lightweight clothing, keeping them well hydrated, minimizing physical activities during the hottest parts of the day, and using fans and other temporary cooling devices when necessary.
