Clearpol's Summary of this Guidance

The California Department of Public Health has issued an All Facilities Letter (AFL) to Skilled Nursing Facilities, Intermediate Care Facilities, and Nursing Facilities regarding changes to Health and Safety Code Section 1261.6 regarding Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs). The statutory provision that allowed the use of ADCs that permitted licensed personnel to have access to multiple drugs and were not patient-specific in their design expired on December 31, 2011. Effective January 1, 2012, these facilities may neither operate nor install an ADC that provides access to multiple drugs and is not patient-specific in its design. Facilities should refer to the full text of HSC Section 1261.6 to ensure compliance with ADD/ADC requirements. If facilities have any questions, they should contact Sue Chaban, Pharmaceutical Consultant.
