The California Department of Health has issued a new All Facilities Letter outlining updated regulations for testing diesel backup generators in healthcare facilities. Effective January 1, 2011, health facilities must test each diesel backup generator 12 times per year, with intervals of no less than 20 days and no more than 40 days. Tests must be conducted for at least 30 continuous minutes under specified conditions. If a generator cannot be tested according to these requirements, alternative testing procedures are provided. Facilities utilizing a diesel generator may request program flexibility from their local district office to use the Air Resources Board standards at HSC Section 41514.1 to meet licensure requirements. Non-compliance may result in regulatory action. Facilities should contact their local district office with any questions or concerns.
