The California Department of Health has issued a new All Facilities Letter regarding the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Five-Star Rating Posting Requirement for skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). Effective January 1, 2011, SNFs must post their overall facility rating information in public, employee, and communal resident areas. The information must include the facility's name, address, and most recent star rating, as well as explanatory text about the rating system. Facilities have seven business days to update their posting after receiving a new rating from CMS. A detailed explanation of the rating must be maintained at the facility and made available upon request. Violations of these requirements will be considered a class B violation. Facilities must continue to post their most recent overall rating even if the Quality Measures component is discontinued, until a new rating becomes available.
