Registered dental hygienists (RDH) in alternative practice may provide dental hygiene services to SNF residents and oral health in-service training to SNF staff, effective 1/1/23.
This can help meet the requirement at T22 §72301 (e) Required Services – arrangements shall be made for an advisory dentist to participate at least annually in the staff development program for all patient care personnel.

The California Department of Health issued a new All Facilities Letter (AFL) regarding Assembly Bill (AB) 2145, which authorizes registered dental hygienists in alternative practice to provide dental hygiene services and training in long-term care facilities. Effective January 1, 2023, these dental hygienists can offer services to patients in skilled nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities, and other specified healthcare settings. Additionally, the bill allows these dental hygienists to provide oral health in-service training to long-term care facility staff. Healthcare facilities must comply with these new regulations to ensure the provision of adequate dental care and training for their patients and staff.
