The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has issued a new provider letter (PL 2021-15) stating that, starting August 1, 2021, fingerprint-based criminal history checks will be required for medication aides renewing their permits and applicants for the medication aide examination. This applies to various provider types, including assisted living facilities, nursing facilities, and others. Training programs will no longer be responsible for conducting criminal history checks on trainees. Instead, applicants will need to submit fingerprints and pay for the criminal history check themselves. Providers must continue to conduct criminal history checks, nurse aide registry checks, and employee misconduct registry checks to verify employability. The new policy aims to enhance the safety and security of patients in healthcare facilities.
