The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued a new All Facilities Letter (AFL) extending the temporary waiver of certain professional certification requirements for Home Health Aides (HHAs) until June 30, 2022, due to the ongoing COVID-19 state of emergency. HHAs with active status are encouraged to renew their certification following normal timelines, but may continue to work without completing the application process until the waiver expires. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has also modified the requirements for completing the annual 12 hours of in-service training for HHAs. Those with expired certifications within the previous two years or expiring during the state of emergency may work as HHAs until June 30, 2022. All HHAs with an existing waiver must renew their certification prior to this date. Program flexibility requests not specified in the AFL must be submitted to the Healthcare Workforce Branch for review on a case-by-case basis.
