The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) has issued a new Provider Information Notice (PIN) to inform healthcare facilities about the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Funeral Assistance Program for COVID-19 funeral expenses. The program can provide up to $7,000 in funeral assistance for COVID-19 related deaths and expenses incurred after January 20, 2020. FEMA will begin implementing this program in April 2021, with additional guidance to be released soon. Healthcare facilities are encouraged to share this information with staff, persons in care, representatives, families, and others affected by COVID-19 losses. Those with COVID-19 funeral expenses should gather and keep documentation to submit to FEMA with their application for assistance. To learn more about the program, visit the FEMA webpage for COVID-19 Funeral Assistance. For questions about the PIN, contact local Regional Offices or other designated CDSS program contacts.
