Nursing homes and other healthcare facilities must provide or obtain laboratory services to meet the needs of residents. If the facility provides its own laboratory services, they must have a current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) certificate appropriate for the level of testing performed. Facilities collecting and/or preparing specimens and not performing testing are not considered to be providing laboratory services and do not need to meet the requirements of 42 CFR Part §493. Noncompliance with this regulation may result in citations and investigation into related structure, process, and/or outcome requirements. Nursing homes and other healthcare facilities must ensure they meet the needs of residents with regard to the quality and/or timeliness of providing laboratory services and reporting laboratory results.
