Nursing homes and other healthcare facilities must not use any individual working in the facility as a paid feeding assistant unless they have successfully completed a State-approved training program. The training must include 8 hours of instruction in feeding techniques, assistance with feeding and hydration, communication and interpersonal skills, appropriate responses to resident behavior, safety and emergency procedures, infection control, resident rights, and recognizing changes in resident behavior. Facilities must maintain a record of all individuals who have completed the training program and must not hire any paid feeding assistants without it. If concerns about the performance of the paid feeding assistant are identified, the facility should refer to 42 CFR §483.60(h). This new regulation will require nursing homes and other healthcare facilities to ensure that all paid feeding assistants have completed the necessary training in order to provide quality care to their residents.
