Nursing homes and other healthcare facilities must thoroughly investigate all allegations of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and mistreatment, including injuries of unknown source. The investigation must include observations of the alleged victim, interviews with the alleged victim and representative, alleged perpetrator, witnesses, practitioner, outside agencies, and hospital or emergency room personnel, as well as record review. Facilities must also take preventative measures to ensure no further abuse, neglect, exploitation, or mistreatment occurs while the investigation is in progress. Upon completion of the investigation, the facility must take corrective action if the allegation is verified. The Quality Assessment & Assurance committee should also monitor the investigation, and assure that residents are protected and that corrective actions are implemented. This will impact nursing homes and healthcare facilities by requiring them to take additional steps in order to ensure the safety of the residents.
