Nursing homes and other healthcare facilities must designate a physician to serve as medical director and ensure they fulfill their responsibilities to effectively implement resident care policies and coordinate medical care. The medical director must be knowledgeable about current professional standards of practice in caring for long term care residents and be involved in administrative decisions, coordination of medical care, and development of educational programs.
