The California Department of Health has issued an All Facilities Letter (AFL) alerting healthcare facilities of Level II Excessive Heat Warnings from August 14-17, 2020. Facilities must implement precautionary measures to keep individuals safe and comfortable during extreme heat and have contingency plans for dealing with the loss of air conditioning. Measures to ensure patients and residents are free of heat-related health complications must be taken. Facilities must report extreme heat conditions that compromise patient health and safety and/or require evacuation, transfer, or discharge of patients. The letter also provides recommendations for keeping residents comfortable during hot weather, such as staying hydrated, minimizing physical activities, and using fans. Healthcare providers and facilities should continue to follow the latest COVID-19 guidance from the CDC and CDPH AFLs.
