The California Department of Health has issued an All Facilities Letter requiring all skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) to submit a COVID-19 mitigation plan within 21 calendar days. The plan must include six elements: testing and cohorting, infection prevention and control, personal protective equipment (PPE), staffing shortages, designation of space, and communication. Failure to implement an approved plan may result in immediate jeopardy. Each facility will receive a visit from the Department of Health to validate its certification at least every six to eight weeks. If a facility is found not implementing its approved plan and has unsafe practices, enforcement action may be taken. The letter also provides updated infection control guidance for healthcare personnel.
