The California Department of Health has issued a new All Facilities Letter, requiring all certified Medicare and/or Medicaid nursing facilities to use the updated Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) 3.0 User's Manual v1.15, effective October 1, 2017. The manual provides guidance, coding instruction, steps for assessments, and clarification in various chapters related to resident assessment practices in long-term care facilities. The updated version includes new guidance and coding instructions for sections N and P. Facilities must use this manual as a reference when completing the Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0. Non-compliance may result in penalties or loss of certification. The updated manual can be found on the CMS website.
