The California Department of Health has issued an All Facilities Letter alerting long-term health care facilities (LTCFs) to potential influenza outbreaks in their communities. The letter reiterates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on prevention and control of influenza in LTCFs. LTCFs are urged to take measures to lessen the impact of a local influenza outbreak on residents, who are at high risk of complications such as pneumonia, hospitalization, and death. Recommendations include being vigilant for cases of influenza, testing for influenza in residents with influenza-like illness, vaccinating residents and staff, treating all residents with suspected or confirmed influenza with antivirals, and implementing enhanced standard precautions plus droplet recommendations. LTCFs are also required to report all suspected and confirmed outbreaks to the LTCF medical director, local health department, and CDPH Licensing and Certification district office.
