The California Department of Health has issued a new All Facilities Letter (AFL) announcing changes to tuberculosis (TB) screening and testing regulations for various healthcare facilities, including nursing homes. Effective May 30th, 2013, facilities no longer need to submit program flexibility for TB screening tests that are licensed by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). However, program flexibility is still required if a facility uses a test outside of FDA or CDC recommendations. The updated regulations can be found in Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations. Facilities are responsible for following all applicable laws and should contact their respective Licensing & Certification District Office for any additional questions.
