The California Department of Health has issued a new All Facilities Letter introducing the California Healthcare Event and Reporting Tool (CalHEART) for all healthcare facilities/providers. CalHEART is an online platform for reporting Adverse Event (AE) and/or patient medical information (PMI) breach incidents and viewing healthcare-associated infection reports. The tool is designed to streamline communication between healthcare facilities/providers and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Licensing and Certification Program (L&C). Facilities/providers can use CalHEART to submit AE and PMI breach incidents, view investigation progress, and access the status of all self-reported incidents. Additionally, general acute care hospitals can preview their own quarterly healthcare-associated infections reports. To access CalHEART, facilities/providers must have their Operations Executive endorse a representative(s) and complete the Request for Access to CalHEART form. The use of CalHEART does not change the current statutory requirements for reporting AEs and/or PMI breach incidents; it is offered as an alternative way to report incidents to CDPH.
