The California Department of Health has issued an All Facilities Letter (AFL) extending the implementation date for incompatible line connectors in healthcare facilities. General Acute Care Hospitals, Acute Psychiatric Hospitals, Skilled Nursing Facilities, and Special Hospitals must now use intravenous (IV), epidural, and enteral line connectors that cannot be used for a type other than the type intended by January 1, 2016. This extension is due to the design standards not being completed in time to meet the original deadlines. Hospitals and Skilled Nursing Facilities that fail to comply will be subject to enforcement action. Patient safety plans must continue to include measures to prevent adverse events associated with misconnecting IV, enteral feeding, and epidural lines until the new deadline takes effect. Facilities are responsible for following all applicable laws and being aware of all legislative changes.
