The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) has issued a new Provider Information Notice (PIN) announcing the availability of $21 million to support one-time $500 Hero Award stipends for caregivers working in qualified Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs) and Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly — Continuing Care Communities (RCFE-CCRCs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The stipends aim to retain staff and support those who may need to take time off due to illness. To be eligible, caregivers must have worked in a qualified facility within 60 days of applying for the stipend. Priority will be given to caregivers working in facilities with individuals testing positive for COVID-19. Applications for the stipends are available online, and the deadline for applying is June 30, 2020. Licensees must use the Department's background check system, Guardian, to complete the employment verification required for eligible staff to receive the one-time stipend.
